Move over Movember.
Edmonton Oilers’ winger Mike Brown has sported a fashionable mustache in many forms during his career, and his 2013 handlebar lip sweater is finally getting the recognition it deserves — Brown has been nominated for the 2013 Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year Award.
The prestigious award is organized by the American Mustache Institute, founded in 1965 to combat “a demonstrated discriminatory culture against people of Mustached American heritage.” Past winners of the award include former Diamondbacks reliever Clay Zavada — for his Rollie Fingers-esque whiskers — St. Louis pitcher John Axford — for his manicured Fu Manchu — and last year’s winner, Pittsburgh-area philanthropist Adam Causgrove — for his Victorian-inspired mouth brow.
The award isn’t simply given to the best mustache around, but “to the person who is deemed [the best representative] of the sexually dynamic Mustached American lifestyle.” Brown faces some stiff competition this year — other nominees include journalist Geraldo Rivera, gay rights activist D. Bruce Haynes and, in what certain mustache aficionados are calling a ringer, Ron Burgundy.
The nation waits with bated breath as the American Mustache Institute tallies online votes for the 2013 award. The winner will be crowned at ‘Stache Bash 2013 on Oct. 26 in Pittsburgh.
The theme for the party? Hairy Halloween.
