Cole, who has spent the last two seasons with the Patriots, was released by the team on Friday ahead of the team’s Week 3 game in Atlanta. This now marks the second time the Patriots have released Cole only to re-sign him a few days later on the year. He was also released on Sept. 1 but was brought back only a few days later, ahead of their Week 1 game with the Buffalo Bills.
Cole, 29, has played in three games with the Patriots this season, primarily serving as a gunner on special teams, but he has yet to record a tackle. His importance on special teams has only been further heightened by Matthew Slater‘s absence due to a broken hand over the past few weeks.
Safety Kanorris Davis took Cole’s spot on the roster against the Falcons on Sunday, but he was released on Monday. There is a good chance Davis will be re-signed to the practice squad at some point soon. He cleared waivers on Tuesday.
