Words can’t really describe the Red Sox’ amazing turnaround this season. So you could imagine how difficult it must have been for New England newspapers to map out their front page for Thursday morning.
The Red Sox secured their third World Series title in 10 years Wednesday. Boston completed its worst-to-first turnaround with a 6-1 victory over St. Louis in Game 6 of the Fall Classic. There was certainly were no shortage of storylines when it came to this year’s Red Sox team, but the group will ultimately be defined by its character, chemistry, and resilience.
The Red Sox finished the 2012 season with a 69-93 record and in last place in the American League East. General manager Ben Cherington revamped the roster in the offseason and brought in a new manager in John Farrell, but expectations were obviously tempered given what transpired last year.
It didn’t take long for the 2013 version of the Sox to win over Boston fans. The likeable, gritty bunch enjoyed plenty of success out of the gate. And then, when tragedy struck on April 15, the city rallied behind the club, which the players seemed to relish. The Red Sox were once again the focal point of Boston, and they wanted nothing more than to make their city proud.
