After losing a few important guys to injury and falling to their division rivals, the Patriots have decided to beef up their defense.

The Pats will sign defensive end Andre Carter on Tuesday, according to Josina Anderson‘s sources.

Carter is a free agent after spending 2012 with the Oakland Raiders. In 12 games last season, he had 19 tackles to go along with just 2 1/2 sacks. In 2011 with the Patriots, he racked up 10 sacks and 52 tackles in what was his 11th NFL season. The 34-year-old signed a one-year contract this offseason to go back to the Raiders, but he didn’t make the final roster cut. The seventh overall pick in 2001 has 78 1/2 career NFL sacks to his name.
