Josh Freeman‘s time in Tampa Bay has run its course, and the Buccaneers are reportedly trying to facilitate a swift exit for the quarterback.
The Buccaneers have made calls to nearly a dozen teams around the NFL to gauge trade interest for Freeman, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder. They plan to eventually reach out to all 32 teams to size up the potential market.
Freeman was benched by head coach Greg Schiano ahead of last week’s game with the Arizona Cardinals after a disappointing start to the season. Rookie Mike Glennon was named as the starter in his place. The situation has since devolved into an all-out soap opera.
On Sunday, Freeman was reportedly forced, apparently against his will, to watch the Buccaneers’ 13-10 loss to the Cardinals from a suite at Raymond James Stadium. Just a day later news leaked of Freeman’s participation in the NFL’s drug program, which prompted speculation about off-field problems with the quarterback. Freeman quickly released a statement, refuting any insinuations about drug problems and explaining that he willingly entered the program.
No matter where the information came from, Freeman’s divorce is getting messy and needs to be resolved soon. So it’s probably in the best interest of both the team and Freeman that the split come sooner rather than later.
