The Philadelphia Flyers are off to about as bad of a start as you could imagine, and it’s apparently going to cost the head coach his job.
The Flyers have fired head coach Peter Laviolette, according to Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News. Also according to Seravalli, the Flyers will replace Laviolette with assistant coach Craig Berube. It’s unclear at this point whether Berube will have the interim tag moving forward.
Philadelphia struggled for much of the lockout-shortened 2013 season. A four-game win streak to end the season is the only thing that kept them from finishing below .500, as they ended the season with a 23-22-3, which put them one point out of the final spot in the then Atlantic Division standings.
Laviolette was apparently given rope following the shortened season, but the Flyers have stumbled mightily out of the gates this season. They’re 0-3 on the new season, and they already have a goal differential of minus-6.
It probably won’t be long before Laviolette finds another job. The Massachusetts native already has a Stanley Cup to his resume from his time in Carolina, and the Flyers made the Cup Final in his first season on the job. He’s been to the playoffs six times in his 12 seasons spent with the Islanders, Hurricanes and Flyers.
