Report: NFL Sent Video of ‘Push Rule’ to Head Coaches, Working With Officials to Call Penalty More Often

The Red Sox lost Game 3 of the World Series on an obscure ruling, just like the Patriots did against the Jets a week ago. While the Fall Classic continues mired in controversy, though, the NFL is trying to avoid any more on their end.

The NFL sent video to all 32 head coaches this week to further emphasize the “push rule” that saw the Jets topple the Patriots last Sunday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The league is informing teams that it is working with officials to call more push penalties the rest of this season.

The new rule prohibits defensive players from pushing teammates toward the line of scrimmage. Violation of the rule, as Patriots defensive tackle Chris Jones found out on Sunday, results in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The ruling against Jones negated Nick Folk‘s missed 56-yard field goal attempt and moved the Jets up to give the kicker the game-winning shot from 42 yards out.
