Mariano Rivera received an absurd amount of gifts on his farewell tour after he announced his retirement from the game of baseball, but the NHL is a different animal and Teemu Selanne will be leaving Philadelphia with less than he had when he arrived.

The Anaheim Ducks star, who announced that this season would be his last in a great way, was forced to leave Tuesday night’s game against the Flyers after he was hit by a high stick from defenseman Luke Schenn early in the third period.

The 43-year-old immediately went down, but received a hearty ovation from the Philly crowd as the beloved player was helped off the ice, clutching a towel to his mouth. Despite the gruesomeness of the play, no penalty was called.

The Ducks announced during the game that Selanne would not return, and they have since revealed that he lost several teeth and has a swollen jaw following the errant stick.
