Tom Brady Continues to Focus Too Much on Rob Gronkowski, Throws Interception on First Pass of Game (GIF)

No one was happier to see Rob Gronkowski back on the game field last week that Tom Brady, but he may need a quick reminder that he has other receivers, too.

Brady targeted Gronkowski 17 times against the Jets a week ago, leading Rex Ryan to call for bracket coverage on the tight end for much of the second half. Brady went back to Gronkowski on his first pass against the Dolphins on Sunday, and it seems the Miami defense was prepared for just that.

Dolphins cornerback Dimitri Patterson dropped into coverage on Gronkowski on the Patriots’ first offensive play of the day, and it’s almost like he knew the pass was coming that way. Patterson read Brady’s eyes and jumped the route, sneaking in front of Gronkowski and picking off Brady’s pass to give the ball back to the Dolphins’ offense. Ryan Tannehill led the Fins down the field and threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to receiver Brandon Gibson to give Miami the early lead.

Brady’s throwing hand has been giving him some trouble over the past few weeks — he even had his middle and ring finger taped together on Saturday, but his biggest issue might be his overreliance on his big tight end.
