Either we file this one under “having too much fun” or we must view it as something more sinister.

Fans of Tottenham Hotspur hit a referee assistant David Bryan with a smoke bomb Sunday, during their team’s Premier League game against Aston Villa.

Someone hurled an object from the section containing visiting fans at Villa Park, as Spurs’ fans were celebrating Andros Townsend‘s first-half goal. The object, which appeared to be a blue-colored flare, hit Bryan’s back, causing him to scurry away from the sideline. He escaped the incident unharmed and continued to work, as police and stewards tried to find the culprit.

Whether fan meant to hit the linesman is beside the point. It’s almost always a bad idea to throw things on the field — especially hot, smoking objects. This is basic stuff, really.
