World Series Red Sox Cardinals BaseballFOXBORO, Mass. — Since the Red Sox won the World Series, childhood friends Ryan Mallett and Will Middlebrooks have been playing text message tag.

The Patriots’ backup quarterback didn’t make it through the whole game — he has to stay focused on the Steelers, naturally — but he did wake up and send his good friend a congratulatory text.

“I was excited,” Mallett said. “I woke up with a feeling. I was like ‘There’s no way they came back.’ I saw the score and I texted him and was like, ‘Man, that’s awesome. Congrats.’ It’s awesome for the city.”

Mallett didn’t get a chance to check his phone until he got back into the locker room from practice. He found pictures from Middlebrooks of the Red Sox’ celebration and a text that read, “It’s unreal.”

Middlebrooks got just two at-bats in the World Series, but he participated in the one play Red Sox fans may want to forget when he inadvertently interfered with Allen Craig at third base, leading to a game-winning obstruction call.
