Joe Girardi will be back in the Bronx next year and for the foreseeable future, for that matter.
The Yankees announced Wednesday that they have signed their manager to a four-year contract extension. That contract means Girardi will remain the New York skipper through the 2017 season.
Girardi took over prior to the 2008 season. The Yankees missed the playoffs in his first season after going 89-73 and finishing third in the American League East. The following year, however, Girardi led the Yanks to their 28th World Series title in franchise history. The former New York catcher has a 564-408 record at the helm in New York.
Some wondered whether Girardi’s time in New York had come to an end following a 2013 season in which the Yankees finished in third place in the American League East. He would have been a popular candidate for a handful of teams including the Chicago Cubs. The 48-year-old was born in Illinois and attended Northwestern University near Chicago, which are obviously moot points now that he’s re-signed with the Yankees.
