Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury came up through the Red Sox system together. Now, it looks like Pedroia will be a member of the Red Sox for life, while Ellsbury’s future is somewhat uncertain given his current free agency.
If Ellsbury eventually signs elsewhere, however, it won’t be without some lobbying by his longtime teammate. Pedroia told ESPN.com that he’d like to see Ellsbury re-sign with the Red Sox this offseason.
“He’s probably at a restaurant somewhere, because all he does is eat,” Pedroia reportedly said. “I might try to talk with him a little bit.
“Jacoby loves playing in Boston. There’s this misconception out there that all he wanted to do this year was maximize his value so he could go somewhere else. That’s not fair. He’s been a great teammate, a huge part of our team. I’ll be really happy if I show up to spring training and see him there.”
Pedroia broke into the majors in 2006, while Ellsbury made his big league debut in 2007. If we have indeed seen the duo suit up together for the final time, it was one heck of a run that netted the Red Sox two World Series titles.
