Ed Reed was the Houston Texans’ big free-agent addition this offseason. Things didn’t exactly work out between the two sides, though.
The Texans decided to part ways with Reed on Tuesday, waiving the eight-time All-Pro safety a little more than six months after signing him. Reed confirmed his release on Tuesday, tweeting out a thank you to the Texans and the city of Houston.

Reed, 35, spent 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, totaling 606 tackles, 61 interceptions and seven defensive touchdowns with the team. Even at his older age, Reed was still considered one of the top safeties in football this past offseason, especially following an impressive performance in the postseason on the way to his first Super Bowl victory.
The Texans felt he could improve their defense and inked the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year (2004) to a three-year, $15 million contract with $5 million guaranteed in March. Reed didn’t debut for the Texans until Week 3, though, missing the first two games and the entire preseason while recovering from offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum. But Reed never seemed fully healthy, playing sparingly as the season wore on. He recorded just 16 tackles in seven games with Houston this season.
Reed will now be placed on waivers, giving the other 31 teams a chance to claim the nine-time Pro Bowler before hitting free agency. If a team decides to claim him on waivers, they will assume responsibility for the remaining $411,000 in salary for this season.
