Florida College Player’s Ferocious Dunk Rips Rim off Backboard (Video)

Forget Florida Gulf Coast — the real Dunk City sits two hours north in Temple Terrace, Fla.

That’s where Anthony Allen, a freshman at tiny, 800-student Florida College, literally brought down the rim with a thunderous slam during Friday night’s game. Trailing behind the play on a fast break, Allen grabbed a missed layup and threw down a putback dunk with such force that it snapped the rim right off the backboard.

The crowd in the intimate gym understandably lost its collective mind, and even days later, Falcons head coach Jim Romkey still could not believe what he had seen.

“I’m still kind of stunned by the whole thing,” Romkey told Yahoo! Sports’ The Dagger on Monday. “It literally broke the rim. It wasn’t showing any wear. It just snapped the metal right in half. It wasn’t like these were 45-year-old rims either. The rims were put up three years ago when we put our new gym floor in. They were regulation.”

Romkey also said that he plans to present Allen with the broken rim — a fitting memento for a dunk the freshman will never forget.
