Bill Mueller is taking his talents to the North Side of Chicago.
Mueller, who is best known for helping the Red Sox end an 86-year championship drought, has been named the Cubs’ new hitting coach. Brandon Hyde (bench coach), Gary Jones (third base/infield coach), Mike Brumley (assistant hitting coach) and Jose Castro (quality assurance coach) are also joining manager Rick Renteria‘s staff, the club announced Friday.
Mueller most recently worked as a scout with the Dodgers. He also served as the Dodgers hitting coach in 2007 before becoming a special assistant to general manager Ned Colletti, a position he held through the 2012 season.
Mueller’s true fame, however, came during his playing days in Boston. He won a batting title in 2003, and then helped the Red Sox win their first World Series title since 1918 in 2004. Mueller, of course, delivered a game-tying single off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS.
