Just because you wish and wish and wish doesn’t mean something is going to come true.
Teams are discovering that harsh reality when it comes to prized slugger Giancarlo Stanton, whom the Marlins apparently have no intention of trading away this winter or at any point in the foreseeable future.
“Mr. Stanton is not available,” Marlins general manager Dan Jennings said during a radio interview Sunday. “He is going to be in right field at Marlins Park, and [we’re] looking forward to having a big year with him. We’re excited. We think it’s going to be a lot of fun building around him, and what he can mean to this ballclub and that city.”
Stanton has been the subject of trade speculation for a while now. But despite rumors about Miami potentially dealing the outfielder, the Marlins have remained adamant that he isn’t going anywhere. Stanton, who turns 24 on Friday, is one of the game’s bright young stars, and the Marlins clearly plan to proceed with him as a franchise cornerstone.
Stanton had a down year by his standards in 2013. He hit .249 with 24 home runs and 62 RBIs in 116 games. Stanton hit .290 and crushed a career-high 37 homers in 123 games in 2012, though, and his power makes him an attractive option for any team.
