Henrik and Daniel Sedin are two of the best players in the history of the Vancouver Canucks, and by signing new four-year contracts on Friday, the twins have taken another step toward finishing their NHL careers with the franchise.
Elliotte Friedman from Hockey Night in Canada reported that the extensions are worth $28 million, which is an average of $7 million per season. The Sedins make an average of $6.1 million in their current deals, which expire at the end of this season.
“Daniel and Henrik are exemplary leaders, teammates and humanitarians and we’re very pleased to have them as part of our team for the long-term,” said Canucks general manager Mike Gillis in a statement. “Few players in the history of this club have had more significant roles in contributing to the success of this team and to our community and we look forward to many more years with their positive influence leading the way.”
If one or both players hit the open market next summer, they probably could have received more money and term as unrestricted free agents, but loyalty is important to the Sedins.
Henrik is the all-time leading scorer in Canucks history and the club’s only Hart Trophy winner (2010-11). He currently leads the team with 18 points, while Daniel ranks second in scoring with 15 points. The two Swedish forwards, who are 33 years old, have been Vancouver’s top-two scorers in seven consecutive seasons. The last time one of them didn’t lead the team in scoring was the 2005-06 season.
