They don’t play a whole lot of defense at Division III Grinnell College, but with sharpshooters like Jack Taylor on the floor, they really don’t need to.
After his second — yes, second — career 100-plus-point performance, the junior is averaging a grand total of 90 points per game on the season after dropping 70 in the first game of the year on Nov. 15.
Taylor, who broke the NCAA record by scoring 138 points in a game last season, hung 109 on D-III Crossroads College on Sunday — the third-highest single-game total in NCAA history — despite playing just 29 minutes.
Grinnell head coach David Arseneault‘s “System” offense basically involves his 5-foot-10, 165-pound guard chucking up as many shots as humanly possible, and Taylor ran it to perfection in the 173-123 win. He put up a total of 70 shots in his limited time on the floor, going 35-of-70 from the field, 24-of-48 from 3-point range and an additional 15-of-17 from the free throw line.
“For stretches tonight, it really was just him, the ball and the basket,” associate coach David Arseneault Jr. told USA Today.
Outrageous box scores are becoming the norm at the tiny Iowa school, which is home to fewer than 1,700 students. In 23 games last season, the Pioneers failed to reach the century mark just five times. They’ve topped 100 in both games so far this season, totaling 317 points over a pair of blowout wins.
