As his team enters the bye week, Rex Ryan has the Jets way ahead of expectations and sitting in a prime position to make a playoff run. Even so, his future with the franchise is still very much uncertain.

Ryan was on the hot season to begin the season after a 6-10 finish in 2012 saw the Jets undergo a major changeover both on and off the field. The head coach was one of the few who remained unaffected by the changes, though it wasn’t without warning.

The Jets have been very inconsistent this season, alternating wins and losses through Week 9, but they still boast a 5-4 record and are very much in the thick of the playoff race heading into the home stretch of the season. The team’s unbelievable turnaround hasn’t bought Ryan any more security for his future, however, as general manage John Idzik still has the jury deliberating.

“Very well,” Idzik said praising Ryan’s performance to reporters at a team event on Monday night. “[He’s] pulled it all together.”

While they are kind words of encouragement, Idzik’s short, cryptic statements aren’t exactly ringing endorsements for the head coach’s future in the Meadowlands. The GM has every right to take his time in deciding if Ryan is part of this team’s future, and he was up front about that reality as well on Monday.

“[We’re] living in the moment,” Idzik said, refusing to add anything further on the team’s future plans.

Ryan does have one more season left on his current contract with the team, so Idzik won’t need to make a decision this offseason. Although, as well as Ryan has responded to the pressure this season, playing out a season with a lame duck head coach isn’t exactly ideal circumstances for any team never mind one with as many questions as the Jets will face yet again this offseason.
