Marlins ace Jose Fernandez beat out Yasiel Puig and Shelby Miller to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award on Monday, but that was hardly the most memorable moment of the 21-year-old’s offseason — or even his week.

Fernandez defected from Cuba when he was 15 years old, forcing him to leave much of his family behind to pursue a life in the United States. He has not been able to return to his homeland since his departure to the U.S., meaning that he has not seen many of his family members, including his grandmother, with whom he is very close, in more than five years.

On Sunday, the young right-hander sat down for an interview in the Marlins clubhouse and spoke about his love for his grandma, unbeknownst to the fact that Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria had pulled some strings to bring her to Miami for her grandson’s big day. The result is a perfect and heartwarming reunion, leaving the usually boisterous Fernandez speechless.
