The torch is sitting there, just waiting to be passed. It might not be long before the handoff is official.
As Manny Ramirez tries to convince major league teams that he still has something left in the tank, his son, Manny Ramirez Jr., is gearing up for his first season of Division I college baseball.
The younger Ramirez will play baseball at the University of San Francisco this season, according to reports. He reportedly is transferring from Central Arizona College and will be a freshman upon his arrival in Frisco. The 18-year-old first baseman checks in at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, and, like his father, brings plenty of offensive promise.
“We are very excited to have signed Manny Ramirez Jr.,” University of San Francisco head coach Nino Giarratano told CSNBayArea.com in an email. “He is a very talented hitter, has a chance to hit in the middle of our lineup, and provide us with a great approach as a hitter and defensive first baseman. The best part of Manny is how he handles himself as a person — he is very humble, driven and competitive.”
Ramirez attended high school at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he hit .331 with three homers, 36 RBIs, 11 doubles and two triples. He was named to the Rawlings 2013 Florida All Region First Team.
The 41-year-old Manny that we all know and love is still pushing for a big league return, with his agent even putting in work at the GM meetings this month. If the 12-time All-Star’s career is finally over, though, we can at least rest assured knowing that Manny 2.0 might soon be coming.
