Never underestimate the power of song.
P.K. Subban has emerged as a certifiable star in Montreal, but his ice time hasn’t always reflected that this season. The Norris Trophy winner has been spending prolonged stretches of time on the bench — most notably not receiving shifts at the end of tight games — and Subban’s absence has prompted plenty of the Canadiens faithful and media members to question how head coach Michel Therrien is utilizing one of his best players.
Subban ranks second among NHL defenseman in scoring with 15 points, but ranks 12th in time on the ice, leading Chris Pennington to release a catchy single titled, “Why Not P.K.” The persuasive anthem that is inspired by the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.,” implores Therrien to use his defenseman more often, and the jingle seems to be getting the job done.
Two days after Pennington released the track on TSN 690, Subban logged 28:22 of ice time and led all players with eight shots on goal. The very next game, Subban recorded a season-high in ice time at 29:01, sparking the Canadiens to a shootout win over the Blue Jackets.
