The hearings in Alex Rodriguez’s appeal of his Major League Baseball suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs have ended, but that doesn’t mean the evidence, testimony or just good old slime is going to stop anytime soon.
A major tactic of the Rodriguez defense has been to attack the credibility of those testifying against him. That applied specifically to Anthony Bosch, the owner of the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic that is said to have supplied Rodriguez with the banned substances. While there’s an extensive paper trail linking the two, Rodriguez’s team has sought to undercut Bosch’s credibility as the main witness for MLB. That effort has extended to a lawsuit Rodriguez is bringing against MLB and its commissioner, Bud Selig.
While Rodriguez’s group attacked Bosch regularly in the appeal hearings, one bit of information that wasn’t used that will reportedly be included in the lawsuit is an accusation that Bosch was a cocaine user, according to the New York Post.
Bosch used cocaine “on almost a daily basis but at least many times per week and month,” Robert Davis Miller is said to have testified in an affidavit. Miller, whom the Post says is a convicted drug dealer, also has said that Bosch took money from MLB in exchange for offering damaging information about Rodriguez.
The Post offers a picture that it says shows Bosch sitting at a table with bags of “unidentified white powder,” appearing to corroborate Miller’s claims.
The appeal hearings have ended, and arbitrator Fredric Horowitz is expected to offer a ruling on Rodriguez’s suspension in January. The lawsuit, however, could continue the fight, if a federal or state court picks it up and sifts through what Rodriguez’s team is inferring are some major red flags in how MLB has treated Rodriguez, specifically in its reliance on Bosch.
Rodriguez is using the lawsuit as another way to fight his MLB suspension, as he has alleged that the league is doing anything it can to force him out of the game. A victory there could give him outside legal support against MLB.
