Alfredo Aceves makes you shake your head from time to time. But he also comes with upside, which will likely be enough for some team to roll the dice on the polarizing right-hander.
The Mets might be that team. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Aceves, who is a free agent, is “a good possibility” to land with the Mets.
Aceves went 4-1 with a 4.86 ERA in 11 appearances (six starts) with the Red Sox in 2013. His behavior was somewhat questionable, though, and he found himself outrighted off Boston’s 40-man roster in July.
It’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly Aceves will give a team in 2014. In addition to his tumultuous 2013 campaign, Aceves went 2-10 with a 5.36 ERA and 25 saves in 69 relief appearances in 2012. The 30-year-old did go 10-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 55 appearances (four starts) in 2011, however, and his versatility and experience pitching in a big market — he pitched for the Yankees from 2008 through 2010 before joining the Red Sox prior to the 2011 season — could make him a cost-effective contributor.
