Brian McCann may be wearing pinstripes for the foreseeable future.
The New York Yankees are close to signing the catcher to a five-year deal worth more than $80 million, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal is reporting. Rosenthal and CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman both revealed earlier that the Yankees were in “serious” talks with McCann, but a deal was not believed to be close at the time.
While the Red Sox and Rangers were also reportedly interested in the former Braves backstop, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News noted that McCann had ruled out Texas, adding that he was “on the verge” of signing a deal with New York.
The Yankees placed an emphasis on catching this offseason, and if they have in fact landed McCann, the Bronx Bombers have acquired the best catcher available on the open market.
In 102 games with the Braves, McCann hit .256 with 20 home runs and 57 RBI, marking his sixth consecutive 20-home run season.
