The Buffalo Sabres are looking for a new general manager, and they may look to pick a familiar face out of a division rival.
The Boston Globe’s Fluto Shinzawa reported Monday night that the Bruins have given the Sabres permission to interview Boston assistant general manager Jim Benning for Buffalo’s open general manager job. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported the same news shortly after.
That Sabres’ GM position was vacated last week when Darcy Regier was fired. Pat LaFontaine was hired as president of hockey operations, and he’s looking to fill the vacant GM spot.
Benning is a name that would certainly make sense. He’s in his eighth season with the B’s working closely with general manager Peter Chiarelli. He was hired by the Bruins in 2006 as directer of player personnel and was promoted to assistant GM a year later. Benning is also certainly familiar with the Sabres. He was in that organization’s front office for 12 seasons in which he served eight years as the director of amateur scouting.
