Dwayne Bowe isn’t having his best season on the field. He’s not making the best decisions off it either.
Bowe, 29, was arrested and charged with speeding and possession of marijuana just outside of Kansas City on Sunday night, according to WDAF-TV. Police pulled Bowe over just before midnight after observing the Pro Bowl receiver going 48 in a 35-mph zone. Officers then noticed a potent aroma of marijuana coming from Bowe’s 2011 Audi A8 and asked him and two passengers to step out of the vehicle. Upon further search, the officers found more than 10 grams of weed in the car, leading to Bowe’s arrest.
This isn’t Bowe’s first drug-related incident, however. He was suspended four game by the NFL in 2009 for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, meaning he’s already in the league’s drug program and could face further punishment. There has been no indication as to potential discipline from the league or team regarding the arrest.
The Chiefs, who were on a bye week last week, signed Bowe to a five-year, $40 million deal during the offseason. He hasn’t exactly produced to the level of his bulky salary, though. Through nine games, Bowe has caught just 33 passes for 369 yards and two touchdowns. His targets (58) are way down from the lofty numbers he saw in 2010 (132 targets) and 2011 (141 targets). Last season was arguably the worst of Bowe’s career, as he caught just 59 passes for 801 yards and three touchdowns during the Chiefs’ dismal 2-14 campaign.
Bowe was released from jail on $750 bail and is due in court on Dec. 18 to face the charges.
