Former Oakland Raiders linebacker Thomas Howard was one of two people killed in a multi-car crash in Oakland early on Monday morning.
Howard, 30, was driving at over 100 mph on highway 880 outside of Oakland around 1 a.m. on Monday when he clipped the back of a semi-truck, sending his BMW over the center median and into two oncoming cars, including a Honda CR-V, on the opposite side of the highway, according to KRON4-TV in Oakland. Howard and the driver of the Honda CR-V, reportedly a 55-year-old man, were both killed at the scene, according to the report.
Howard, who as drafted by the Raiders in the second round in 2006, spent five seasons playing in Oakland. He enjoyed his two best seasons as a pro with the Raiders, totaling 110 tackles as a rookie and then recording 95 tackles and six sacks in his second season. After a lack of playing time during his fifth season in Oakland, Howard signed a two-year, $6.5 million deal with the Cincinnati Bengals ahead of the 2011 season. He spent two seasons with the Bengals, managing 99 tackles in his first year but suffering a season-ending ACL tear in his second with the team. He was signed by the Falcons for three weeks this season, but he was inactive for all three games.
