The Red Sox have been taking their time figuring out who their main catcher will be next season. Boston may not be able to keep Jarrod Saltalamacchia in a holding pattern much longer, though, as the free agent is drawing more attention as other prized catchers get scooped up.
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that, in addition to the Twins, who are looking to replace Joe Mauer as he shifts to first base, the Rockies and Blue Jays could also try to sneak in and sign Saltalamacchia. While the Red Sox and Saltalamacchia have expressed interest in the catcher remaining with the team, Boston reportedly wants just a two-year deal since the club has prospects coming up, while Saltalamacchia is looking for a longer contract after a strong 2013 season.
Heyman says the Rockies may move Wilin Rosario to the outfield, opening the catcher spot, and the Blue Jays could use more offensive lift behind the plate, with J.P. Arencibia batting just .194 last season. Both teams have “checked in” on Saltalamacchia, although the level of their interest is unknown.
Saltalamacchia did a fine job managing the Red Sox’ pitching staff last year and improved at the plate, posting a .273/.338/.466 line with 14 homers.
