It’s 2013 and we don’t yet have flying cars, hover boards or the ability to determine if a hockey puck has actually crossed the goal line, but the NHL could be moving closer toward the latter.
Amid a season that has seen its fair share of goals waved off by officials, the league is reportedly set to meet with with a group that has designed a camera system that can be installed in the goal posts, according to Darren Dreger of TSN. The system would aim to give a clear view of the goal line, helping to determine definitively whether a goal had actually been scored.
Some of the missed calls this season have been egregious and many have cost teams a win, so the NHL is doing what it can to make sure the calls are right in the future. The technology could still be a ways off, though, and officials don’t seem to be able to find any kind of consistency in their rulings.
The league often uses in-net cameras during warmups, and the footage serves to help the video review process, but it still doesn’t provide 100 percent accuracy. For now, the game will remain saddled with the element of human error, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on whom you ask.
