Report: Orioles Interested in Carlos Beltran, Although Pursuit Might Hinge on Trading Matt Wieters

Carlos BeltranAnother team is surfacing in the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes.

According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles are interested in Beltran, although their pursuit may hinge on whether they trade Matt Wieters or another high-salaried player.

Beltran, who turns 37 in April, appears to be one of the most sought-after players on the free-agent market. The eight-time All-Star hit .296 with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs with the Cardinals in 2013 after blasting 32 homers and driving in 97 runs in 2012. It’s clear that the veteran outfielder still has some game left in the tank, and he’s thus drawing plenty of interest among teams looking for offense.

Beltran will likely command a big salary, though, which means, according to Rosenthal, that Baltimore might have to move some money around to accommodate a strong pursuit. Wieters is considered one of the game’s better offensive catchers, but he has also been the subject of trade speculation, as there’s a chance that the Orioles could lose him in free agency next winter.
