The Patriots are getting some help at tight end.
After New England went into Sunday night’s game with just Rob Gronkowski and Matthew Mulligan active, the team is expected to sign a tight end on Tuesday.
D.J. Williams visited the Patriots and is expected to sign “shortly,” according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. Williams was drafted in the fifth round by the Packers in 2011. He signed with the Jaguars on Sept. 1 after being waived by Green Bay. Williams was released by Jacksonville on Nov. 4.
Williams has nine catches for 70 yards in his three-year career. He was the 2010 John Mackey Award winner after catching 54 passes for 627 yards and four touchdowns at Arkansas, where he was a teammate of Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett.
Michael Hoomanawanui hurt his knee against the Panthers. The Patriots will need to open a roster spot before signing Williams.
UPDATE: The Patriots released defensive tackle Marcus Forston, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com. Forston would have to clear waivers to sign back on to the Patriots’ practice squad.
