Cano isn’t budging off his request for a 10-year, $310 million contract in free agency, according to ESPN.com’s Andrew Marchand. The Yankees reportedly remain very interested in keeping Cano, but they don’t appear willing to shell out that kind of dough.
Marchand speculates that Cano will need to drop his asking price by about $100 million-$120 million if he’s going to stay in New York, while also noting that it would be surprising if the five-time All-Star signed a new deal before next month’s winter meetings. Cano is the best free agent available this winter, and there figures to be a large market for the second baseman’s services.
Cano hit .314 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs. The 31-year-old is a career .309 hitter, and his representatives are trying to market him as a “face of the franchise-type” player.
