Steven Stamkos didn’t get to play on the Canadian national team that won the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and his hopes of making the 2014 Olympic squad were put in jeopardy when he broke his tibia earlier in the week against the Boston Bruins.
Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos reported on Friday night that the Tampa Bay Lightning superstar is wearing a removable cast as he gets ready to begin an “aggressive rehab.”

Stamkos was expected to be one of Canada’s top-four centers for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, where it will attempt to win back-to-back gold medals for the first time in over 50 years. The 23-year-old forward had played in 344 straight games before suffering his leg injury, and he’s missed only three regular-season games in his six-year NHL career.
Recovering from this injury and getting into hockey shape in time for February’s Olympics will be a difficult challenge, but if there’s one player in the NHL with the work ethic required to accomplish this goal, it’s Stamkos.
