The Packers’ offense looked out of place on Sunday, and it can be almost entirely attributed to the absence of Aaron Rodgers. Scott Tolzien wasnt terrible in his place, though, and he’s even earned himself another chance to prove himself.
Tolzien, who was forced into the game after Seneca Wallace was injured in the first quarter, completed 24 of 39 passes for 282 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Eagles on Sunday, but that wasn’t enough to get a win for the Packers. It was, however, enough to convince head coach Mike McCarthy that Tolzien deserves the start against the New York Giants next weekend.
“I’ll tell you right now, Scott Tolzien will start against the New York Giants, so we’ll answer that question right here,” McCarthy said, per ESPN Wisconsin’s Jason Wilde.
McCarthy announced in his postgame press conference that Tolzien would start against the Giants next Sunday. Rodgers is expected to be out another three-to-five weeks with a collarbone injury, and Wallace’s status is still uncertain. Giving Tolzien the nod this early, though, takes a big weight off the Packers as they enter a new week of practice, allowing the offense to gel with just one signal caller instead of a carousel of quarterbacks.
Tolzien, 26, went undrafted out of Wisconsin in 2011. He spent the 2011 season between the Chargers practice squad and the 49ers active roster. He was on the 49ers during their Super Bowl run last season as well.
