Hockey fans watching Monday’s matinee matchup between the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning surely cringed when Lightning forward Steven Stamkos crashed into his team’s goal post and was unable to make it off the ice on his own.
Stamkos,Tampa’s best player, was carried off the ice on a stretcher and taken to a local Boston hospital where it was reported that he suffered a broken tibia. It was a blow to the Lightning’s offense, but Stamkos has already reached out and thanked friends, family and fans for the support.

The injury will require surgery, which could put the 23-year-old out of the game for at least a few months.
Bruins fans are no strangers to devastating leg injuries like Stamkos’. B’s forward Gregory Campbell broke his right fibula during the 2013 Eastern Conference finals, so he likely knows how Stamkos is feeling, both physically and mentally. Campbell wished the Lightning star well on his road to recovery.
Stamkos entered Monday’s game tied for the league lead in scoring with 23 points, and tied for first in goals scored with 14.
