Phil Robertson knew a thing or two about ducks before he started a multi-million dollar duck call business. The problem was, however, those ducks came on the football field.
While Robertson has moved on from football and has gained a ton of fame (and even more money) by starting the Duck Commander business and eventually becoming a star of the reality show Duck Dynasty, he was once a college football player. In fact, Robertson played quarterback for Louisiana Tech where he supposedly beat out Terry Bradshaw for a job at one point (more on that here).
Robertson made his debut on Sept. 18, 1965 against Rice. With the Owls set to take La. Tech this weekend, the Rice athletic department has unearthed game footage of Robertson’s college debut.
It wasn’t exactly impressive. According to Rice, Robertson completed three of five passes for 37 yards to go along with two rushes totaling three yards. Those two incomplete passes were, well, ducks. Legend has it that Robertson gave up a potential future in the NFL to go be in the woods and make duck calls, which means he must have improved a lot after this showing.
Rice would eventually win the game 14-0, which undoubtedly made them happy, happy, happy.
