The Yankees have two words for Robinson Cano: Get real.
After news that Cano is not budging off his request for a 10-year, $310 million contract in free agency, Yankees president Randy Levine confirmed that the two parties are still quite far apart in salary talks.
“We want Robbie back. We think Robbie is terrific,” Levine told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “But we have no interest in doing any 10-year deals and no interest in paying $300 million to any player. Until he gets a little more realistic, we have nothing to talk about.”
Cano and his agents are looking for what would be the richest contract in baseball history — even more than the Yankees shelled out in the 10-year, $275 million deal they gave Alex Rodriguez before he opted out of his previous contract in 2007.
Levine’s defiance comes a day after news that Cano’s team, Jay-Z and agents Brodie Van Wagenen and Juan Perez, met with the Mets to talk about a potential deal for the second baseman.
