Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner broke one of the NBA’s unwritten rules Sunday night, and he knew it right away.
With the Sixers leading the Los Angeles Lakers by five in the game’s closing seconds, Turner received a pass on a fast break and threw down the type of dunk that’s typically reserved for All-Star Weekend. Turner evidently realized immediately that his thunderous slam could be viewed as showing up his opponents, and as the game clock hit triple zeros, he went over and apologized to each player on the Lakers’ bench.
It was an embarrassing end to an embarrassing week for the purple and gold, who have now lost five in a row and nine of their last 12. Five Sixers, including Turner, scored in double figures in the 111-104 win, the fifth time in the last five games that a Lakers opponent has topped 100 points.
