Ottawa welcomed back its former captain with open arms on Sunday night.

Daniel Alfredsson made his much-anticipated return to the Canadian Tire Centre as the Red Wings came to town on a date that was certainly circled on the calendars of most Senators fans. After 17 years with Ottawa, the winger signed a one-year contract with Detroit during the offseason, but the Senators faithful showed no signs of resentment toward Alfie while honoring him with a pregame ceremony.

Senators fans greeted Alfredsson with a standing ovation as a video tribute that highlighted the Swede’s long and impressive career in Otttawa played on the scoreboard. An emotional Alfredsson watched from the front of the bench before skating out to center ice and raising his stick to thank the fans for their warm reception.
