David Oritz will be in a Red Sox uniform through the 2014 season. It sounds as if he and the Red Sox are trying to make sure their relationship extends beyond the upcoming season, as well.
The Boston designated hitter is currently hosting his annual golf tournament in the Dominican Republic, and he told reporters that his agent and the Red Sox have talked about a possible one-year contract extension. Ortiz is currently signed through the 2014 season after he agreed to a two-year deal reportedly worth $26 million last November.
Ortiz is coming off of another stellar season. The 38-year-old hit .309 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs. The home runs were the most he’s hit since hitting 32 in 2010, and it marked his highest RBI total since driving in 117 runs in 2007.
Ortiz was even better when the playoffs began. He hit .353 with five home runs and 13 RBIs to go along with a 1.206 OPS on the way to helping the Red Sox win another World Series. That includes hitting .688 (11-for-16) in the Fall Classic with a mind-boggling 1.948 OPS.
The DH is expected to make a reported $11 million in 2014.
