Gary DiSarcina spent just one season behind the bench of the Pawtucket Red Sox, but his brief tenure with the Triple-A club was a rousing success.
On Thursday, Baseball America named DiSarcina its Minor League Manager of the Year after the skipper led the PawSox to within three games of their second straight Governors’ Cup title.
DiSarcina’s impact was also felt at the major league level, as Xander Bogaerts, Will Middlebrooks, Jackie Bradley Jr., Jose Iglesias and a host of Red Sox pitchers all spent time in Pawtucket during the Sox’ championship campaign.
“To me, what stood out the most was that when you pressed him, ‘I need to know this,’ there was never any wavering,” manager John Farrell told Baseball America. “It was clear, it was concise and as accurate as it could be. What we saw come to life was spot on. When it came to specific guys we were considering, his firsthand evaluations, his firsthand involvement, his experience with the individuals, he knew more than what maybe just what an evaluator’s eye would see from the stands.
“His recommendations were spot on.”
After the season, DiSarcina was hired as the third base coach for the Los Angeles Angels, with whom he spent his entire 12-year playing career.
