A loss to the lowly Jaguars on Thursday night was the last straw for Gary Kubiak.
Kubiak has been fired as head coach of the Houston Texans, team owner Bob McNair announced at a press conference Friday.
Entering the season as favorites in the AFC South after two consecutive division titles, the Texans have been the NFL’s greatest disappointment this year.
Thursday’s loss to Jacksonville — the Jaguars’ first win at home since Nov. 25, 2012 — was Houston’s 11th straight, dropping the team to 2-11 on the year and making it the front-runner for the first overall pick in next year’s draft.
Inconsistency under center has doomed the Texans this season — rookie Case Keenum replaced original starter Matt Schaub midway through the season, only to be benched himself in two of the last three games — as has a season-ending injury to All-Pro running back Arian Foster.
Houston has games with Indianapolis, Denver and Tennessee remaining on its schedule. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will take over head coaching duties on an interim basis.
