Former United States president George W. Bush is a huge sports fan, and now that he’s enjoying retirement after a lengthy career in politics, he has a lot more time to watch his favorite teams.
As a football fan, Bush must have been amazed at the thrilling finish to this year’s Iron Bowl between rivals Alabama and Auburn, a game the Tigers won on a 109-yard return of a missed field goal as time expired. Auburn’s stunning victory ended Alabama’s 16-game winning streak and propelled the Tigers to a berth in the BCS title game.
For Crimson Tide kicker Cade Foster, who failed to convert on all three of his field-goal attempts in the game (one of which was blocked), the loss was one of the most difficult experiences of his collegiate career.
Amid all of the criticism Foster has received, he’s also gotten plenty of support, most recently from another No. 43. Bush sent a handwritten letter to Foster, telling him that “life has its setbacks,” but that the experience will make the senior kicker a stronger person.
