It took 14 straight losses to do it, but the Houston Texans secured the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
The Texans dropped their season finale Sunday, 16-10 to the Tennessee Titans, to finish the season with the worst record in the league. After winning their first two games of the season, Houston failed to record another victory, and head coach Gary Kubiak subsequently was fired after the team’s Week 14 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After winning the AFC South in back-to-back seasons, the Texans will undergo something of a rebuilding process this offseason, filling their head-coaching vacancy and deciding which player to take with their top pick. Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien reportedly is the franchise’s No. 1 choice to take over at the helm, and according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the sides are close to reaching a deal.
With Matt Schaub likely having played his last down with the Texans, the team likely will go after a quarterback with their top pick. Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater is a viable option, but he hasn’t yet declared that he will forego his senior year of college.
Since entering the league in 2002, the Texans have locked up the No. 1 pick just twice. They took quarterback David Carr in 2002 and defensive end Mario Williams in 2006.
