The New England Patriots have signed 27-year-old wide receiver Greg Orton to the practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday.

Orton came into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009, and spent about two years on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad from 2011-12. He took part in the Broncos’ training camp this year but failed to make the team after being cut in August.

The former Purdue player has not played in an NFL game.

With the Patriots potentially having to defend several talented wide receivers with size and strength during the playoffs, Orton gives the team’s secondary a big receiver to defend in practice.
