Oklahoma State Cheerleader Facing Discipline From University After Attempting to Trip Oklahoma Player (GIF)

Tripping opposing players was presumably not in the cheer oath that one Oklahoma State cheerleader took upon joining the squad, and he’ll now be paying the price for his actions.

Jared AtkinsonĀ attempted to trip Oklahoma linebacker Erik Striker as he celebrated the game-winning touchdown in the Bedlam matchup on Saturday. The male cheerleader stuck his foot out as Striker was running by, but the unsuspecting Sooner wasn’t bothered by the attempt as it just missed tripping him up.

Atkinson’s actions didn’t go unnoticed, however, with the cheerleader gaining some Internet notoriety over the weekend and the negative attention spilled over into the following week. The university announced that they will be disciplining the cheerleader, who told athletic director Dave Martin that it was incidental and he had no intention of tripping Striker.

“In response to the inquiry concerning the violation of conference rule 12-3-1, theĀ Oklahoma StateĀ University athletics department does not condone, physical or verbally abusive acts toward anyone working, attending or competing in our athletic events,” Martin said in an official statement. “I have personally met with all the members of the OSU spirit team and verbalized our expectations for their representation of our department. I have met individually with the male student involved with the incident and he is extremely apologetic for his involvement. And he understands there will be consequences for his poor judgment and actions. At this time, I feel confident the situation has been thoroughly investigated and that consequences for the involved person are warranted and will be administered.”

More rah-rah, less trip-trip, OK State.
