The Chicago Bears’ defense has struggled mightily all season, ranking 29th in total defense and last against the run, but they waited until Week 17 to give up arguably one of the worst touchdowns of the year.
In the do-or-die battle for the NFC North title with the Packers, the Bears were hanging onto a 7-3 lead late in the second quarter when Green Bay took the lead on a bizarre touchdown. The confusion began when Julius Peppers hit Aaron Rodgers’ arm as he was attempting a pass, sending the ball just a few yards beyond the line of scrimmage. The Chicago defense, along with almost everyone on the field, assumed the play was dead and didn’t make an effort to recover the ball. In fact, Green Bay receiver Jarrett Boykin was the only man on the field to run over to where the ball had landed.
Boykin casually grabbed the pigskin off the ground and stood with his back to the end zone before Rodgers ran over and motioned for him to run. Although the whistle still hadn’t blown, no Bears chased Boykin, and the receiver was credited with a fumble-return touchdown.
