The Boston Red Sox announced Monday that they will not tender contracts to right-hander Andrew Bailey or outfielder Ryan Kalish, making both free agents.
Before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in July, Bailey appeared in 30 games for the Red Sox, going 3-1 with eight saves while posting a 3.77 ERA. The right-hander was acquired from Oakland in 2012 and appeared in just 49 games in two years with Boston.
Bailey was arbitration eligible and likely would have made around $4 million if the Sox had tendered his contract. The 29-year-old could miss the first half of the season, as well, as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
Kalish missed the entire 2013 season, recovering from surgeries on his shoulder and neck.
Boston tendered contracts to the other 26 unsigned players on its major league roster, including the five others who were arbitration eligible: Burke Badenhop, Mike Carp, Junichi Tazawa, Franklin Morales and Andrew Miller.
